April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

With studies showing that one in four college women will be assaulted before their graduation (dailytrojan.com), one can not help but to wonder what actions can a woman take in order to reduce their risk of being assaulted?

Unfortunately, you can never completely protect yourself from an assault. But, here's a few steps that can be taken in order to reduce your chances:

  • Avoiding dangerous situations: You can do this by being aware of your surroundings. Do not text while walking or place earphones in both ears. This distraction leaves you vulnerable and unaware of your surroundings. Walk with a purpose and avoid walking anywhere alone whenever possible. When traveling alone in a vehicle, keep doors locked. Also, trust your instincts! If you feel like you are about to be placed in an uncomfortable situation, get out!
  • Plan to be safe: Become aware of all possible exits of the place you are going to, and places you visit often. This allows you to be able to escape in case of an emergency. Keep cash on you at all times. This will come in handy should you have to hop in a cab to make an escape or run to the nearest pay phone to call for help because your cell phone died. Have your keys out and ready before you reach your destination, whether it be car or house.

Think and plan ahead. Be smart by being safe!

  1. Hi Jessica
Thank you for sharing. I really didnt know that April is sexual assault awareness month. You have provided great information on this topic. It is short and to the point. The keys points you have included are awesome. I said the same thing. As women, we should always be aware of our surroundings. Also, women should let someone know where they are going and what time they should be home. It is always a good idea to give the details to a close friend or a family member before leaving for the night or even a day. Just because it is a day time, women think they are safe rather than never to drop their guard for even a moment. Assaults happen at any given moment of the day.

    1. Thanks Anastasiya! I agree, women should always let someone know where they are going. My mother is extremely big on this factor. I try to always let someone know exactly where I am going, especially when traveling alone. Yes, the daytime does seem to have women drop their guard, but they should also be alert during that time as well.

  3. I learned something new! I did not realize that April was Sexual Assault Awareness Month. I completely agree with your post! Most women do not necessarily pay attention to what they are doing and do things, like search through their purse for their keys and cellphone or putting both earbuds in, that can cause a potential dangerous situation to arise. Hopefully women will read these posts and take the information to heart so they can reduce their risk of sexual assault.

  5. Hey Jessica,
I did not know that April was a Sexual Assault Awareness Month.Thank you! I agree with you that we women need to be aware of our surroundings and also need to know the ways to combat the assault. I think we should also stop feeling weak and develop self esteem withing ourselves to fight against this terror. But as you said, we need to know our surrounding and need to stay alert.

  6. Hi Jessica! Thank you for sharing. I also did not know that this month is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This is great information you have provided. It really does feed into a higher risk situation when a girl is just fiddling around not fully aware of what is going on. It can just take 1 second and boom, something could happen. Having keys in hand ready to start that car is very important and on the ball. Thank you!! :)

  8. Hi Jessica,

Even though I have written the same topic as yours , I have no idea April is a Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Thank you! I believe that surroundings are the main thing that we need to take a caution of, because we, as women, never know what would happen in our areas. Be altered, be calm and be prepared in most situations.

  9. I like how you brought up being aware of possible exits in places that you frequent. It is important to know that you are not trapped and to know the best way to escape a potentially dangerous situation. I also like how you talk about being aware of your surroundings. You have to know what is going on around you instead of focusing so much on music or phones. Great job you on your blog (:
